Week 4

Pink Flamingos

I still remember the excitement of my first visit to the old Jurong Bird Park many years ago. As a young child, everything seemed so much bigger and more wonderful than I had ever imagined. The colourful birds, the cheerful sounds that filled the air, and the beautifully landscaped surroundings left me wide-eyed with amazement. It was a day I have never forgotten.

How quickly the years have passed.

More recently, as I watched the graceful pink flamingos quietly wading through the water, those childhood memories came flooding back. Many of us have probably stood for a while, captivated by their elegant movements, their vibrant pink feathers, and the remarkable way they balance so effortlessly on their long, slender legs. They seem to move with such calmness and grace, perfectly suited to the world God created for them.

As I watched them, I found myself marvelling once again at the beauty and wisdom of God’s creation.

Then another thought came to mind.

If our Heavenly Father cares so wonderfully for these beautiful birds, how much more does He care for those who are created in His own image?

Jesus reminded His disciples to look at the birds of the air. They do not sow or reap, yet our Heavenly Father faithfully provides for them. If God lovingly watches over every sparrow and every flamingo, surely His love and care for us are even greater.

Looking back over my own life, I can see His loving hand at work in ways I did not always recognise at the time. He has faithfully guided my steps through seasons of uncertainty, provided for my needs when I did not know how things would work out, shaped my character through both joyful and difficult experiences, and carried me safely through challenges I never imagined I would face.

Many of His blessings did not come through dramatic miracles. Instead, they came quietly, one day at a time—in His daily provision, His timely guidance, His unseen protection, and the people He placed along my journey. Looking back, I can now see that His faithful care was always there, even when I was unaware of it.

As you reflect today, take a moment to remember the many quiet ways God has cared for you throughout your life. Perhaps it was an unexpected answer to prayer, a friend who appeared at just the right time, strength during a difficult season, or simply the gift of another new day.

His blessings may not always have been spectacular, but they have always been real.

The same God who faithfully watches over every bird of the air and every flower of the field is watching over you today. He knows your needs before you ask. He walks beside you every step of the way. He provides, protects, guides, and sustains you with unfailing love.

May the graceful flamingos remind us that our lives are safely held in the hands of our loving Creator. And may we rest each day in the quiet assurance that the God who has faithfully cared for us in the past will continue to watch over us in the days to come.

Bible Verse:

See the birds of the sky, that they don’t sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns. Your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you of much more value than they?

Matthew 6:26 WEB

Blessings:

God’s blessings are continuous. He is faithful and will continue to provide for my needs, watch over my life, guide my steps, and care for me each day.

Reflection Point:

Watching the flamingos brings a smile to my heart, reminding me that the same God who cares for them has lovingly watched over me through every season of my life.

Reflection Question:

Take a moment to remember a season of your life. How was God caring for you then, even before you realised it?

Action to Consider for this week:

Take a walk and pay attention to God’s creation around you. As you reflect on the many ways He has faithfully cared for you throughout your life, thank Him for a blessing you may have overlooked. Then reach out to someone who has been part of God’s care—a family member, friend, mentor, or colleague—and thank them for the blessing they have been in your life.

Hymn for the Reflection

His Eye Is on the Sparrow

Hymn Writer

Civilla D. Martin (1866–1948) was an American author, teacher, and hymn writer who devoted much of her life to encouraging Christians through poetry and songs. Together with her husband, Walter Stillman Martin, an evangelist, she travelled widely in ministry, writing hymns and gospel songs that pointed people to God’s love, comfort, and faithfulness.

Although she wrote many hymns during her lifetime, “His Eye Is on the Sparrow” became her most enduring work. Its message continues to reassure believers that God notices every detail of our lives and lovingly watches over us.

The hymn’s music was composed by Charles H. Gabriel, one of America’s most prolific gospel song composers, who wrote melodies for thousands of hymns during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The Story Behind the Hymn

In the spring of 1905, Walter and Civilla Martin visited a couple named Mr. and Mrs. Doolittle in Elmira, New York.

Mrs. Doolittle had been bedridden for nearly twenty years because of a serious illness. Her husband was also physically disabled and relied on a wheelchair. Despite their many hardships, their home was filled with joy, peace, and unwavering faith in God.

During the visit, Civilla Martin was deeply moved by Mrs. Doolittle’s cheerful spirit. Curious about her remarkable outlook, she asked how she was able to remain so hopeful despite constant suffering.

Mrs. Doolittle simply replied “His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.”

Her words were inspired by Jesus’ teaching in the Gospels about God’s loving care for even the smallest birds.

Those simple yet profound words stayed with Civilla Martin. Shortly afterwards, she wrote the poem that became “His Eye Is on the Sparrow.” Charles H. Gabriel then composed the melody, and together they created one of the most beloved hymns of comfort and trust ever written.

More than a century later, the hymn continues to encourage people facing illness, grief, loneliness, uncertainty, and every kind of trial, reminding them that if God cares for a tiny sparrow, He certainly cares for each one of His children.
