Morning Walkers
There is something refreshing about joining a group of friends for an early morning walk in MacRitchie Reservoir Boardwalk trail. As the sun slowly rises over the trees, the cool morning air fills our lungs, and the quietness of a new day gently awakens our senses. Along the way, conversations flow naturally. Friends chat, share stories, exchange laughter, and encourage one another as they enjoy the simple pleasure of walking together.
Even at that early hour, the trail is already alive. Familiar faces walk along well-worn paths. Some stroll at a leisurely pace, while others exercise with quiet determination. A few pause to stretch beneath the trees, while others greet one another with a smile before continuing on their way.
Watching these familiar routines, I am reminded that the ability to walk, to move freely, and to enjoy another new day is itself a precious gift from God.
Each step we take is possible because He has graciously given us strength in our muscles, breath in our lungs, and life within our bodies. So often we take these gifts for granted, noticing them only when illness, injury, or age reminds us that they are not guaranteed.
As I listen to the cheerful songs of the birds, breathe in the cool morning breeze, and watch the sunlight filter gently through the trees, I realise these moments are far from ordinary. They are quiet reminders of God’s goodness, His creativity, and His faithful presence with us each day.
If we pause long enough to notice, signs of His kindness are everywhere.
Every sunrise declares His faithfulness.
Every breath speaks of His sustaining grace.
Every heartbeat is a gift.
Every step is made possible because He continues to uphold us.
Looking back over the years, I can see how God has carried me through every season of life. When I was weak, He gave me strength. When I was discouraged, He renewed my hope. When I grew weary, He refreshed my spirit. When the path ahead seemed uncertain, He faithfully guided my steps. Even when I was unaware of His presence, His loving hand never left me.
The strength we need for today does not come from ourselves alone. It comes from the Lord, who faithfully renews us day by day. He not only gives us physical strength for our daily tasks but also provides courage for our challenges, wisdom for our decisions, patience for our relationships, and peace for our hearts.
As we begin this new day, take a moment to thank God for the gift of life and the strength He has given us. Whether our steps are quick or slow, whether our path is smooth or difficult, remember that we do not walk alone.
The God who strengthened you and me yesterday is the same God who will strengthen us today. He will continue to walk beside us, uphold us by His grace, and faithfully lead us into tomorrow.
So let’s take the next step with confidence, knowing that His strength is always sufficient for each new day.
Bible Verse:
Yahweh is my strength and my shield.
My heart has trusted in him, and I am helped.
Therefore my heart greatly rejoices.
With my song I will thank him.

Where have I experienced God’s quiet strength in my daily life, and who around me may need encouragement today?
Action to Consider for this week:
Take time to notice someone who may be walking through a difficult season. Offer a warm greeting, an encouraging word, or simply walk alongside them for a while.
Hymn for the Reflection
Be Still, My Soul
Hymn Writer
Katharina Amalia Dorothea von Schlegel (1697–1768) was a German religious poet associated with the Pietist movement, which emphasised a personal relationship with God, heartfelt faith, and daily Christian living.
Very little is known about her life, making her one of the more mysterious hymn writers in Christian history. Historical records suggest that she lived in a Lutheran women’s religious community in Germany, where she devoted herself to worship, writing, and encouraging believers through devotional poetry.
Although only one of her hymns became widely known in the English-speaking world, Be Still, My Soul has comforted generations of Christians facing uncertainty, grief, and suffering.
The English version familiar today was translated by Jane Laurie Borthwick, whose faithful translation preserved the hymn’s gentle call to trust God’s wisdom and timing.
The Story Behind the Hymn
Unlike many hymns inspired by a single dramatic event, Be Still, My Soul grew out of the spiritual convictions of the eighteenth-century Pietist movement.
Europe during Katharina von Schlegel’s lifetime experienced political unrest, wars, and social uncertainty. In such an environment, many Christians sought deeper confidence in God’s unchanging character rather than in changing circumstances.
Katharina’s hymn encourages believers to quiet anxious hearts and place complete confidence in God’s sovereign care. Instead of asking why difficult situations arise, it gently reminds us that God faithfully leads His people through every season and that His purposes can be trusted even when they are not fully understood.
Nearly a century later, Jane Borthwick translated the hymn into English, allowing its comforting message to reach readers and worshippers around the world.
Its enduring popularity was strengthened when it began to be sung with Finlandia, the majestic melody composed by Jean Sibelius. Together, the words and music create one of Christianity’s most peaceful and reassuring hymns.
