Making clean
The sight of freshly washed clothes hanging from long bamboo poles, gently swaying in the afternoon breeze, was once a familiar scene throughout Singapore’s HDB estates. Rows of colourful shirts, school uniforms, towels, and bedsheets fluttered outside countless windows, telling the quiet story of families going about their everyday lives. Today, with changing times and improved safety, the long bamboo poles have largely been replaced by lightweight aluminium poles fitted securely into specially designed holders. Though the method has changed, the simple act of hanging out the laundry remains a familiar rhythm in many homes.
For many of us, these scenes bring back fond memories of helping our parents or grandparents with the household chores. We remember carrying baskets of freshly washed clothes, carefully clipping smaller items onto hangers, or watching the adults skilfully lift the long poles into place. There was something deeply satisfying about seeing the washing gently drying in the warmth of the sun and feeling the fresh breeze that promised clean, crisp clothes by evening. These ordinary routines quietly brought comfort and order to the home, reminding us that love is often expressed through the simplest acts of daily care.
We seldom think of hanging out the laundry as an act of love, yet that is exactly what it was. Behind every freshly washed shirt and neatly folded towel were hands that faithfully served the family without expecting recognition or praise. These humble tasks reflected a heart that cared for the well-being of others, one ordinary chore at a time. In much the same way, God has so often blessed us through the ordinary rhythms of life. Clean clothes to wear, a safe place to call home, daily provision, and loved ones who care for us are blessings we can easily overlook, yet each one quietly bears witness to His faithful goodness and loving care.
Contentment begins to grow when we learn to recognise God’s hand in the ordinary. Instead of always longing for something more, we discover joy in what He has already placed in our hands. Looking back, we can see that He has faithfully provided for our needs—not always with abundance as the world measures it, but always with sufficient grace for each day. His loving care has been woven into the ordinary moments of our lives, reminding us again and again that He is near, watching over us with unfailing faithfulness.
Today, God invites us to serve with the same quiet dedication. Whether we are caring for our home, preparing a meal, tending a garden, helping a neighbour, or simply carrying out everyday responsibilities, no act of love is ever too small in His sight. Every chore done with a grateful heart, every responsibility fulfilled with diligence, and every unseen act of kindness becomes an offering of worship to Him. The work may seem ordinary, but when it is done in love, it reflects the heart of Christ.
May this familiar scene remind us that a life of contentment is not built on extraordinary possessions, but on recognising God’s extraordinary faithfulness in the ordinary moments of each day. As we give thanks for His daily provision, may our hearts overflow with gratitude, and may our hands faithfully serve others with humility, joy, and love—bringing glory to God in even the simplest tasks.
Bible Verse:
Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the Lord’s work, because you know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

Hymn for the Reflection
It Is Well with My Soul
Hymn Writer
Horatio Gates Spafford (1828–1888) was an American lawyer, businessman, and devoted Christian living in Chicago. He was active in his church, supported evangelistic ministry, and counted evangelists such as Dwight L. Moody among his close friends.
Despite his successful career, Spafford experienced a series of devastating tragedies. Yet through profound suffering, he demonstrated remarkable faith and trust in God. His enduring legacy is found in one of Christianity’s most beloved hymns, It Is Well with My Soul, a testimony that peace in Christ can remain even when life seems to fall apart.
The Story Behind the Hymn
The story behind It Is Well with My Soul is one of the most moving in hymn history.
In 1871, much of Horatio Spafford’s property was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire, causing severe financial loss. Although difficult, an even greater sorrow lay ahead.
Two years later, in 1873, Spafford planned for his wife, Anna, and their four young daughters to sail to England ahead of him, where they would join Dwight L. Moody for evangelistic meetings. Delayed by business matters, he intended to follow later.
During the voyage, their ship, the SS Ville du Havre, collided with another vessel in the Atlantic Ocean and sank within minutes.
Anna Spafford survived, but all four daughters—Annie, Maggie, Bessie, and Tanetta—were lost.
After being rescued, Anna sent a brief telegram to her husband containing only two unforgettable words: “Saved alone.”
Heartbroken, Horatio sailed across the Atlantic to join his grieving wife.
As his ship passed near the place where his daughters had drowned, the captain quietly informed him. Standing on the deck, overwhelmed with grief yet sustained by his faith in Christ, Spafford began writing the words that would become “It Is Well with My Soul.”
Rather than questioning God’s goodness, the hymn expresses remarkable confidence that God’s peace remains even in life’s darkest valleys.
It has since become a timeless testimony to the sustaining grace of God.
