At the library
My two-year-old granddaughter loves books. With great excitement, she flips through the pages, her eyes lighting up whenever she recognises a familiar animal or object, eagerly calling out its name. Watching her discover the joy of reading fills my heart with delight. Every week, my daughter brings her to the children’s section of the neighbourhood library at NEX to return the books they have borrowed and choose new ones to bring home. It is heartening to see that, even at such a young age, she is developing a love for books and the wonderful world of learning.
Stepping into the neighbourhood library has always felt like entering a place of quiet wonder. The gentle rustle of turning pages, shelves lined with books waiting to be discovered, and children reading with curious eyes create an atmosphere of peace, imagination, and endless possibilities. It is a welcoming place not only for young readers but also for seniors, retirees, and anyone seeking a quiet corner to read, reflect, or simply enjoy a moment of rest. Some spend time reading the day’s newspapers from cover to cover, while others browse magazines, explore new interests, or catch up with friends. For many of us, libraries have been places where unhurried afternoons sparked curiosity, broadened our understanding, and inspired dreams that reached far beyond the pages of a book.
These treasured experiences did not happen by chance. Behind every library stands the faithful work of many people—parents who first introduced us to books, teachers who encouraged us to read, librarians who carefully cared for every volume, authors who shared their knowledge and imagination, and volunteers who made learning accessible to all. Through their quiet dedication, God has graciously provided opportunities for us to grow in knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. The seeds they planted in our hearts have continued to bear fruit throughout our lives, often in ways we never expected.
Yet God’s greatest gift of wisdom is found not on the shelves of a library, but in His living Word. The Scriptures teach us how to know Him, how to love others, and how to walk wisely through every season of life. Through the Bible, the counsel of faithful believers, and the everyday experiences He lovingly allows us to encounter, God patiently shapes our character and guides our steps. Looking back, we can see His wisdom quietly directing our decisions, opening unexpected doors, and leading us along paths that have brought us closer to Him. Only with the passing of time do we fully appreciate how faithfully He has been teaching us all along.
Today, God invites us to become part of someone else’s story of learning and growth. Every encouraging word, every lesson patiently shared, every story read to a child, every conversation that imparts wisdom, and every moment spent helping another person learn is a quiet investment with lasting value. Like planting a tiny seed, we may not see the results immediately, but in God’s perfect time it can grow into something beautiful. May we never underestimate the influence of a kind word, a shared story, or a few moments spent nurturing another heart. As we have freely received God’s wisdom and grace, may we joyfully pass them on to the next generation, leaving behind a legacy of faith, hope, and a lifelong love for learning.

Clara H. Scott (1841–1897) was an American hymn writer, composer, editor, and one of the few women of her time to both write the lyrics and compose the music for her own hymns.
She devoted much of her life to church music and was active in compiling hymn collections for congregational worship. Scott believed that music should help believers draw closer to God and respond personally to His Word.
Although she composed many hymns, “Open My Eyes, That I May See” became her best-known work. Its heartfelt prayer for spiritual understanding continues to inspire Christians around the world.
Tragically, Clara Scott died in 1897 after being involved in a carriage accident, only two years after writing her most famous hymn. Yet her legacy lives on through this timeless prayer.
The Story Behind the Hymn
Clara Scott wrote “Open My Eyes, That I May See” in 1895 during a period of deep reflection on the work of the Holy Spirit in a believer’s life.
Unlike hymns inspired by dramatic personal events, this hymn arose from her desire that Christians would move beyond simply reading Scripture to truly understanding and obeying it.
The repeated prayer – “Open my eyes… Open my ears… Open my mouth…”
expresses a willingness to receive God’s truth and then respond in faithful obedience.
Scott recognised that spiritual understanding is not achieved by human intelligence alone. It is God who opens our eyes to recognise His truth, our ears to hear His voice, and our hearts to follow His will.
Because of its prayerful simplicity, the hymn soon became a favourite in Bible study groups, Sunday schools, schools, and worship services centred on God’s Word.
