Watching a florist gently helping an elderly customer choose a bouquet fills my heart with warmth. It made me pause and ask myself, When was the last time I bought flowers for my wife without waiting for a special occasion or for her to ask? We often think of flowers as gifts for birthdays, anniversaries, or celebrations, yet a simple bouquet given unexpectedly to a parent, a spouse, a dear friend, or even someone going through a difficult season can speak volumes. Sometimes flowers express love, gratitude, encouragement, or comfort more beautifully than words ever could. They remind us that the true beauty of a gift is found not only in the flowers themselves, but in the love and thoughtfulness behind them.
In much the same way, God has filled our lives with beauty and kindness. Throughout our journey, He has blessed us with people who have encouraged us with gentle words, shown us compassion when we were hurting, and brightened our days through thoughtful acts of love. These simple expressions of care are glimpses of His grace at work. Just as flowers delight our eyes with their beauty and fill the air with their fragrance, God desires our lives to reflect the beauty of Christ through kindness, gentleness, compassion, patience, and generosity. A heart transformed by His love leaves behind a fragrance far more lasting than the sweetest flower.
Although flowers eventually wither and fade, the love they represent often remains in the hearts of those who receive them. A bouquet may last only a few days, but the memory of being remembered, appreciated, or deeply loved can be treasured for years. In the same way, God’s love never fades. His mercies are new every morning, His faithfulness never fails, and His grace continues to bloom in every season of our lives. As we remember His goodness, may our hearts overflow with gratitude for the countless ways He has shown His love to us.
Today, let us become bearers of that same love. Whether through a bouquet of flowers, a handwritten note, a warm embrace, a phone call, or a simple act of kindness, we have the opportunity to brighten someone’s day. May our words be gentle, our actions be generous, and our lives carry the sweet fragrance of Christ wherever we go. Long after the flowers have faded, may the love we have shared continue to blossom in the hearts of those God has placed along our path.

Cecil Frances Alexander (1818–1895) was one of the most beloved hymn writers of the nineteenth century. Born in Dublin, Ireland, she became known for writing hymns that explained Christian truths in simple language for children while remaining meaningful to adults.
She married William Alexander, who later became Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland. Throughout her life, she devoted herself not only to writing but also to caring for the poor, visiting the sick, and supporting charitable work within her community.
Among her many hymns are “All Things Bright and Beautiful,” “There Is a Green Hill Far Away,” and “Once in Royal David’s City,” all of which continue to be sung around the world today.
The Story Behind the Hymn
In 1848, Cecil Frances Alexander published All Things Bright and Beautiful as part of a collection of hymns intended to teach children the truths of the Christian faith.
The hymn was inspired by the opening words of the Apostles’ Creed: “I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.”
Rather than presenting this doctrine as a theological statement, she painted vivid pictures of God’s creation—flowers, birds, mountains, rivers, sunsets, and changing seasons—to help children appreciate the beauty of the world God had made.
The hymn quickly became one of the most loved children’s hymns in the English-speaking world. Its joyful celebration of creation continues to inspire believers to worship the Creator whenever they admire the beauty of nature.
