In the stillness of the early morning, as I walked quietly along a garden path, taking time to reflect, ponder, and listen to the gentle sounds of nature awakening to a new day. Since retiring, I have discovered the gift of time, a gift that once seemed so scarce amidst the busyness of work, responsibilities, and deadlines. The pace of life has slowed, allowing me to savour moments that I might once have hurried past. There is no longer a need to rush from one task to another. Instead, I can simply walk one step at a time, resting when I need to, pausing to admire God’s creation, and appreciating the quiet blessings that each new day brings.
Yet while my daily routine has changed, one thing has remained wonderfully constant, God has never retired from caring for me. Whether in the busiest years of life or in this quieter season, His faithfulness has never wavered. Through days of joy and days of sorrow, through certainty and uncertainty, He has always been by my side. He has guided my steps when the way ahead seemed unclear, strengthened me when I was weary, comforted me in times of disappointment and loss, and gently carried me through seasons when I could not walk on my own. Even when I was unaware of His presence, He was faithfully leading me with His unfailing love.
Retirement is not the end of God’s purpose for our lives; it is simply another season of His grace. While we may retire from our occupations, we never retire from walking with God, growing in faith, serving others, or reflecting His love. Each new day is another opportunity to draw closer to Him, to discover fresh mercies, and to become a blessing to those He places along our path. Whether our days are filled with work or with quiet moments, God continues to shape our hearts and use our lives for His glory.
As you journey through your season of life, may you choose to walk even more closely with the Lord. Every step taken with Him is a step of faith, guided by His wisdom, strengthened by His grace, and surrounded by His perfect peace. The greatest blessing is not simply reaching life’s destination, but knowing that from the very first step to the very last, we have never walked alone. He has always been with us—and He always will be.

Dorothy Ann Thrupp (1779–1847) was an English hymn writer and children’s author who had a remarkable ability to express profound biblical truths in simple, memorable language.
Although she never married and lived a relatively quiet life, she devoted much of her ministry to the spiritual nurture of children and families. Her hymns often emphasised God’s love, guidance, and protection, making them suitable for both young believers and adults.
While historians have debated whether she wrote every hymn traditionally attributed to her, Saviour, Like a Shepherd Lead Us has long been associated with her name and remains one of the most treasured hymns on the theme of Christ as the Good Shepherd.
The Story Behind the Hymn
Unlike many hymns that can be traced to a specific life event, Saviour, Like a Shepherd Lead Us appears to have been written as a devotional meditation on the biblical image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd.
During the early nineteenth century, many hymn writers sought to produce songs that would help families and children understand the Christian faith through familiar biblical pictures. Few images were more comforting than that of a shepherd caring for his sheep.
The hymn invites believers to see themselves as sheep who depend completely upon the Shepherd’s guidance, protection, and provision. Rather than celebrating human strength, it acknowledges our need for Christ to lead us safely through every stage of life’s journey.
