TThe familiar sound of an approaching MRT train, the gentle chime before its doors open, and the steady stream of passengers boarding on a weekday morning have become part of the rhythm of daily life in Singapore. Students hurry to school with their backpacks, and office workers make their daily commute to offices. Every journey has a purpose, and every passenger has a story.
Whenever I travel on the MRT, I cannot help but feel thankful for Singapore’s efficient public transport system. Not only the MRT, but also the public buses, taxis, private-hire vehicles, and other modes of transport have made our daily lives remarkably convenient. It is difficult to imagine how we managed without them many years ago. What was once a remarkable innovation has quietly become an indispensable part of our everyday lives, so familiar that we seldom stop to appreciate it.
Yet behind every train that arrives punctually and every bus that reaches its destination safely are countless people faithfully carrying out their responsibilities. Train captains, bus drivers, station staff, maintenance engineers, technicians, cleaners, control room operators, security officers, and many others work diligently—often long before the first commuter begins the day or long after the last passenger has gone home. Their dedication ensures that millions of journeys are completed safely each day.
We may never know their names.
Most of us will never meet them.
Yet through their faithful service, our city continues to move.
As I reflect on this, I am reminded that God often cares for us through the quiet faithfulness of ordinary people. His provision does not always come through extraordinary miracles. More often, it comes through men and women who faithfully fulfil the responsibilities He has entrusted to them. Through their unseen efforts, God watches over our journeys, protects us from dangers we may never recognise, and enables us to arrive safely at our destinations.
Looking back over my own life, I can see many occasions when God faithfully guided my journey—not only from one place to another, but through the many seasons of life itself. There were times when I did not know which direction to take, yet He gently led me. There were moments when the future seemed uncertain, yet He opened the right doors at just the right time. Even when I could not see His hand at work, He was already preparing the path before me.
Our Heavenly Father is always at work, guiding our steps with perfect wisdom, unfailing love, and faithful care.
The Bible reminds us, “Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.” Just as railway tracks faithfully guide every train to its destination, God’s Word directs our lives one step at a time. He may not reveal the entire journey ahead, but He always provides enough light for the next step and enough grace for each new day.
May we also learn from the example of those who faithfully serve behind the scenes. Faithfulness is seldom displayed in dramatic moments. More often, it is found in the quiet acts of obedience, humble service, steady diligence, and unwavering love that are faithfully repeated day after day.
Whether our work is highly visible or largely unnoticed, recognised or unrecognised, every act of faithful service matters to God. Nothing done in love for Him is ever wasted. As we faithfully serve others in the places He has called us, our ordinary lives become extraordinary testimonies of His grace, reflecting His love to a world that longs for hope.
As you begin today’s journey, remember that you are never travelling alone. The God who has faithfully guided you throughout the years continues to walk beside you today. He knows every destination, every detour, every delay, and every step along the way.
May we trust Him with every journey, serve Him faithfully wherever He places us, and become a quiet blessing to those we meet along life’s path.

Thomas Obadiah Chisholm (1866–1960) was an American teacher, newspaper editor, Methodist minister, poet, and hymn writer. Born in a humble log cabin in Kentucky, he had little formal education but possessed a deep love for God and a remarkable gift for writing.
After becoming a Christian at the age of twenty-seven, Chisholm briefly served as a Methodist minister. However, poor health forced him to leave full-time pastoral ministry after only a short period. Rather than becoming discouraged, he devoted himself to writing Christian poetry and hymns that encouraged believers to trust God’s promises.
Throughout his lifetime, Chisholm wrote more than 1,200 hymns and poems, yet he remained humble, believing that his greatest achievement was simply pointing people to Christ. Among all his writings, “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” became his most treasured legacy.
The Story Behind the Hymn
Unlike many famous hymns that were inspired by a dramatic life event, “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” was born from a lifetime of quietly observing God’s unwavering care.
Thomas Chisholm often struggled with poor health and limited financial means. He never achieved great worldly success, nor did he experience spectacular miracles that attracted public attention. Instead, he experienced something even more enduring—God’s steady faithfulness through the ordinary days of life.
Looking back over the years, Chisholm realised that God had never failed him. Every season brought fresh evidence of God’s love, provision, forgiveness, and guidance. These daily experiences inspired him to write a poem based on Lamentations 3:22–23, celebrating the unchanging character of God.
In 1923, Chisholm sent the poem to his friend, composer William M. Runyan. Deeply moved by its message, Runyan composed the beautiful melody that is now inseparable from the hymn.
Although the hymn was not widely known at first, it gradually spread through churches and Christian gatherings. Its worldwide popularity grew significantly through the evangelistic ministry of Billy Graham, whose crusades frequently featured the hymn as a declaration of God’s unfailing faithfulness.
Today, Christians around the world continue to sing it as a joyful testimony that God’s mercy is renewed every morning.
