A family picnic

Recently, my wife and I joined our daughter’s family to celebrate our granddaughter’s second birthday with a simple picnic by the sea at East Coast Park. Our newest granddaughter, only a few months old, was there too, making the gathering even more special. As I looked around, I realised it had been a long time since I had last visited this familiar place. It brought back a flood of memories. There was a season when I regularly ran the entire length of East Coast Park and back, enjoying the challenge, the sea breeze, and the satisfaction of completing each run. The years have passed quickly, but the place still carries many precious memories.

Celebrating a birthday with a picnic by the seaside felt wonderfully refreshing. There were no elaborate decorations or grand programmes, just the sound of the waves, children laughing as they ran across the grass and played in the sand, simple food shared together, and the joy of being surrounded by family. As I watched my granddaughter delight in every little discovery around her, I realised once again that the greatest gift was not the celebration itself, but the blessing of simply being together. These are the moments that quietly become the treasured memories of tomorrow.

Perhaps this scene brings back memories for you as well. You may remember sitting on a picnic mat beneath the shade of a tree, sharing home-cooked food packed lovingly from home, flying kites in the sea breeze, building sandcastles, collecting seashells, or simply watching the children run freely while the adults chatted and laughed together. Looking back, we realise that it was never the location that made those days unforgettable. It was the people beside us, the conversations we shared, the laughter we enjoyed, and the love that surrounded us. The simplest gatherings often become the richest memories.

As I reflected on that afternoon, I was reminded that God has richly blessed us through the gift of togetherness. He places us in families, friendships, and communities where we can celebrate life’s milestones, carry one another through difficult seasons, and grow together in love. Every shared meal, every family gathering, every conversation, and every joyful reunion becomes a quiet expression of His goodness. These relationships are among His most precious gifts, reminding us that we were never created to journey through life alone.

In the busyness of life, it is easy to become occupied with work, responsibilities, and endless commitments, leaving little time for the people who matter most. Yet God gently invites us to slow down and be fully present. Time is one of the greatest gifts we can offer those we love. The moments we spend listening, laughing, praying, serving, and simply enjoying one another’s company become priceless investments that strengthen relationships and leave lasting impressions on the hearts of those around us. Children may not remember every gift they received, but they will remember the love they experienced and the time we willingly shared with them.

Truly, some of God’s greatest blessings are found not in extraordinary events, but in the ordinary moments we share with those He has entrusted to our care. As we thank Him for the gift of family and friendship, may we also make time to nurture these relationships with intentional love, patience, and gratitude. In doing so, we reflect the heart of our Heavenly Father, whose love gathers His children together and whose presence fills every shared moment with lasting joy, peace, and hope.
