Whenever I walk past Rivervale Primary School near my home, my heart is always filled with joy. The cheerful laughter of children echoes across the playground, their boundless energy is contagious, and their carefree spirit reminds me of the simple happiness that fills a child’s world. Watching them run, play, and laugh together brings a smile to my face and reminds me that some of life’s most precious moments are found in the ordinary rhythms of everyday life.
Recently, my two-year-old granddaughter celebrated Racial Harmony Day at her nursery. Dressed in her bright blue-striped blouse, she was full of excitement as she joined her friends for the day’s activities. Seeing her brought back fond memories of many years ago when my wife and I carefully dressed our own daughter for the very same celebration during her primary school days. It hardly seems possible that the years have passed so quickly. The joyful sight of children laughing together, playing chapteh, catching, hopscotch, and chatting happily with one another awakens treasured memories of a childhood filled with innocent friendships and simple delights.
As I watched the children playing together, I was reminded that friendships often begin in the most ordinary places—a playground, a classroom, a shared game, or a simple conversation. Children have a wonderful way of welcoming one another without hesitation. Every smile, every cheer, every successful kick of the chapteh, and every burst of laughter reminds us that joy is never diminished when it is shared; rather, it grows richer and spreads from one heart to another. These precious moments quietly teach us that community is one of God’s beautiful gifts.
Every sunrise, every friendship, every opportunity to learn, serve, forgive, and love is a fresh expression of God’s gracious gift and faithful care. The people He places along our journey, our family, neighbours, classmates, colleagues, church members, and even those we meet only briefly become part of the beautiful tapestry He is weaving throughout our lives. Looking back, we often realise that some of our greatest blessings were not extraordinary events but ordinary relationships through which God encouraged, strengthened, and shaped us.
Perhaps true joy is not found in having a perfect year, but in recognising God’s goodness woven into the ordinary moments of each day. A shared laugh, a helping hand, a kind conversation, an unexpected reunion, or simply the gift of belonging can become treasured memories that remain with us for years. As Scripture reminds us, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above” (James 1:17). When we cultivate grateful hearts, our eyes begin to see the abundance of blessings God has already placed around us.
God also calls us to be people who build bridges rather than barriers. Just as children naturally invite one another into a game regardless of background or ability, we too are invited to extend kindness, hospitality, encouragement, and friendship to those around us. Every welcoming smile, every listening ear, every act of compassion, and every effort to understand someone who is different reflects the heart of Christ and strengthens the community He has entrusted to our care.
May this reflection remind us that one of God’s greatest gifts is the privilege of sharing life with others. As we receive His love with thankful hearts, may we freely share that same love wherever He leads us. May we become peacemakers who build friendships, strengthen families, encourage neighbours, and bring joy, unity, and hope to our community, one simple act of kindness at a time.

Henry van Dyke (1852–1933) was an American Presbyterian minister, author, educator, diplomat, and professor of English literature at Princeton University. A gifted preacher and writer, he believed that Christianity should be marked by hope, gratitude, and joyful living rather than fear or gloom.
Beyond his ministry, Van Dyke served as the United States Ambassador to the Netherlands and Luxembourg during the early years of the First World War. Throughout his life, he sought to communicate the beauty of God’s love through sermons, essays, poetry, and hymns.
Among his many writings, “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee” has become his best-known hymn and remains one of the world’s favourite songs of praise.
The Story Behind the Hymn
In 1907, Henry van Dyke was invited to preach at Williams College in Massachusetts.
Wanting to provide students with a hymn that expressed joyful Christian faith, he wrote “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee.” He later sent the manuscript to his friend, college president Harry Augustus Garfield, with a note explaining: “These are the words that must be sung to Beethoven’s music.”
Van Dyke admired the triumphant melody of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy”, believing it perfectly expressed the overflowing joy found in the Christian faith.
Unlike hymns written during times of personal tragedy, this hymn was intentionally composed as a celebration of God’s goodness revealed through creation, redemption, and the fellowship of believers.
It quickly became one of the church’s great hymns of praise, sung during worship services, weddings, thanksgiving celebrations, and festivals around the world.
