Servanthood
How often I have taken for granted that the common areas around me are clean and well maintained. It is only when a walkway is littered or a corner is untidy that I immediately notice, and perhaps even wonder why it has not been cleaned. Yet I seldom stop to think about the people who faithfully work behind the scenes each day to keep these shared spaces clean, safe, and pleasant for everyone.
One morning, I watched a cleaner quietly pushing her trolley, filled with brooms, mops, cleaning cloths, and other equipment, as she moved from one area to another. It was a humbling reminder that many of life’s greatest blessings come through quiet, unseen acts of service. Long before most of us begin our day, cleaners are already hard at work. Without seeking recognition or praise, they sweep the pathways, empty the bins, wipe the railings, and care for the places we use every day. Their labour often goes unnoticed, yet our daily lives are made healthier, safer, and more comfortable because of their faithful dedication.
Watching her also brought back memories of my school days, when classmates took turns sweeping the classroom, cleaning the blackboard, and arranging the desks before lessons began. I remembered helping my parents sweep the floor, tidy the home, and learn that every chore, however small, was worth doing well. Perhaps you, too, remember a teacher, a parent, or a neighbour who taught you that no task is beneath us when it is done with love and a willing heart. Those simple lessons quietly shaped our character and taught us the dignity of honest work.
As we reflect on these everyday acts of service, we begin to recognise how many people have faithfully cared for us throughout our lives. Cleaners, maintenance workers, caregivers, healthcare staff, teachers, delivery personnel, and countless others have enriched our lives through work that is rarely celebrated. Through their willing hands, God provides for our needs, protects our well-being, and reminds us that every task has value when it is done with care and faithfulness.
Even more wonderful is the truth that God Himself never ceases to care for us. Day after day, He watches over us, provides for our needs, forgives our failures, and gently carries us through every season of life. His love is not loud or attention-seeking, but constant, steadfast, and unfailing. Every sunrise is another reminder that His mercies are new, and every blessing whether great or small is an expression of His faithful love.
Jesus taught us that true greatness is found not in being served, but in serving others with humility and love. Every act of service, no matter how ordinary it may seem, becomes an opportunity to reflect His heart. A helping hand, a listening ear, a simple household chore done without complaint, or a sincere word of encouragement can become a quiet blessing that lightens another person’s burden.
May we never overlook those whose faithful service blesses our lives each day. Let us be generous with our gratitude, quick to say “thank you,” and willing to serve wherever God places us. As we follow Christ’s example, may our own hands become instruments of His grace, for even the smallest act of love, offered in His name, is precious in His sight and can leave a lasting impact on someone else’s life.
