The first light
Growing up in an HDB estate was never truly quiet. Even before the sun appeared above the rooftops, the neighbourhood was already beginning to stir.
As the first light of dawn spread across the rows of HDB blocks where I lived, another day quietly unfolded. Lights flickered on in kitchens as families prepared breakfast before heading off to work or school. The aroma of coffee and toasted bread drifted through open windows. Birds welcomed the new day with their cheerful chorus, while the corridors echoed with the familiar sounds of footsteps, doors opening and closing, and neighbours exchanging warm morning greetings.
Soon, the bus stops would fill with office workers hurrying to catch the next bus, hoping not to be late for work. Children, dressed neatly in their school uniforms, walked alongside their parents with school bags slung over their shoulders. At the nearby parks, some seniors had already begun their morning walks or gentle exercises, greeting familiar faces as another ordinary day began.
Looking back now, I realise they were gentle reminders of God’s faithful presence and loving care.
Every sunrise quietly proclaims that God has given us another day. Before we awaken, before the demands of the day begin, and before we take our very first step, God has already gone before us. His plans for us are already in motion. His watchful eye never leaves us. His mercies are renewed with each morning, His grace is sufficient for every challenge we will face, and His faithfulness remains unchanged through every season of life.
No matter what yesterday may have held—whether success or disappointment, joy or sorrow—God graciously offers us a fresh beginning. Each new morning is an invitation to trust Him again, to walk with Him again, and to experience His goodness anew.
As the sun rises over the homes around you tomorrow morning, pause for a moment before the busyness of the day begins. Listen to the birds, notice the light filling the sky, and thank God for the gift of another new day.
The same God who faithfully watched over you yesterday is watching over you today. He knows your needs before you ask. He walks beside you in every circumstance, guides your steps with wisdom, surrounds you with His unfailing love, and gently unfolds His blessings—one new day at a time.
Every sunrise is more than the beginning of another day.
It is a fresh reminder that God’s faithfulness never fails.

Morning Has Broken
Hymn Writer
The lyrics of Morning Has Broken were written by Eleanor Farjeon (1881–1965), a respected English children’s author, poet, and hymn writer. She was asked to write a hymn celebrating God’s gift of creation and the beauty of each new day. Rather than focusing on human achievements, she pointed readers to the wonder of God’s creative work revealed every morning.
The hymn is traditionally sung to the beautiful Scottish Gaelic melody Bunessan, named after a village on the Isle of Mull in Scotland.
The Story Behind the Hymn
In 1931, Eleanor Farjeon was invited to write a hymn suitable for use in schools. Inspired by the opening chapters of Genesis and the daily gift of sunrise, she composed words that celebrate each morning as a fresh expression of God’s goodness.
Although the hymn was appreciated for many years, it became internationally famous in 1971 when singer Cat Stevens (now Yusuf Islam) recorded it. His version introduced the hymn to millions around the world and remains one of the best-known recordings today.
