The neighbourhood barber
I still remember, as a young boy, having my hair cut by a neighbourhood barber tucked away in an alley beside the old shophouses along Jalan Sultan. There was nothing fancy about the place, just a well-worn swivelling barber’s chair, a small mirror hanging on the wall beside the majestic mosque, a pair of well-used scissors, and the familiar scent of talcum powder and aftershave. Yet to me, it was a place filled with warmth and familiarity. Looking back, I realise that a visit to the barber was much more than a routine errand. It was an experience woven into the rhythm of everyday life.
Perhaps you, too, remember sitting patiently in a well-worn chair while the barber chatted cheerfully with waiting customers and neighbours. You may remember your parents or grandparents bringing you to the same barber month after month. He knew your name, remembered exactly how you liked your hair cut, and always welcomed you with a warm smile. As the gentle snip of the scissors filled the air, you knew you were in caring hands. You left not only looking tidier but also feeling noticed, valued, and cared for. Those simple visits quietly strengthened the bonds of the neighbourhood and gave us a sense of belonging that many of us still treasure today.
As I reflect on those memories, I realise that God has often cared for us through ordinary people and everyday moments. Through the kindness of a familiar barber, a caring neighbour, a patient teacher, a thoughtful friend, or a loving family member, He gently reminded us that we were never forgotten. His love was not always revealed through dramatic miracles, but more often through quiet acts of faithfulness, gentle conversations, warm smiles, and people who took the time to care. Looking back, we can see that His loving hand was present in countless ordinary moments that quietly shaped our lives.
God continues to care for us in the same loving way today. He watches over every detail of our lives, provides for our daily needs, comforts us in our worries, and places people around us who reflect His compassion. Many of these blessings have become so familiar that we scarcely notice them, yet each one is a fresh reminder of His steadfast love and unfailing faithfulness. He knows us even more intimately than the neighbourhood barber who remembered our name, for He knows every hair on our heads and lovingly watches over every step of our journey.
Having received such loving care, we are invited to become channels of God’s love to others. A friendly conversation, an encouraging message, a visit to someone who is lonely, or simply taking time to listen may seem like small gestures, yet they can bring great comfort to someone who needs to know they are seen, valued, and remembered. Just as the neighbourhood barber faithfully served each customer with patience and kindness, may we also reflect God’s heart through simple acts of love wherever He leads us.
May we be reminded always that God’s love is often revealed through ordinary people living ordinary lives with extraordinary kindness. As we give thanks for those who have quietly cared for us over the years, may we also become faithful instruments of His grace, bringing comfort, encouragement, and hope to everyone God places along our path.
Bible Verse:
Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.
1 Peter 5:7 WEB
Blessings:
God has blessed us with His constant love and faithful care. Through family, friends, neighbours, and even familiar faces we encounter each day, He reminds us that we are seen, valued, and deeply loved.
Reflection Point:
God’s loving care is often experienced through the ordinary people and everyday moments He places in our lives. Having received His compassion, we are called to extend that same care to others.
Reflection Question:
Who has shown me God’s care through simple acts of kindness, and who can I intentionally care for this week?
Action to Consider for this week:
Take time to care for someone in a simple but meaningful way. Visit an elderly neighbour, make a phone call to someone who may be feeling lonely, offer a listening ear, or perform a thoughtful act of service. Let your kindness become a gentle reminder of God’s loving care.
Hymn for the Reflection
The King of Love My Shepherd Is
Hymn Writer
Joseph Medlicott Scriven (1819–1886) was born in Dublin, Ireland, into a Christian family. He graduated from Trinity College Dublin and planned to mSir Henry Williams Baker (1821–1877) was an English Anglican priest, editor, and hymn writer. He served as the vicar of Monkland in Herefordshire for more than thirty years and was widely respected for his faithful pastoral ministry.
Baker devoted much of his life to caring for the poor, visiting the sick, and encouraging his congregation through both preaching and personal example. He is perhaps best remembered as the chief editor of the influential hymnal Hymns Ancient and Modern, first published in 1861. This hymnal helped shape Christian worship throughout the English-speaking world and introduced many classic hymns that are still sung today.
Among Baker’s own hymns, The King of Love My Shepherd Is remains his best-known and most enduring work.
The Story Behind the Hymn
In 185Henry Baker wrote “The King of Love My Shepherd Is” in 1868 as a poetic meditation on Psalm 23, one of the most beloved passages in the Bible.
Rather than producing a direct translation, Baker expanded the psalm into a hymn that highlights Christ as the Good Shepherd who lovingly provides, restores, protects, and guides His people.
Each verse reflects a different aspect of the Shepherd’s care:
- He provides for our needs.
- He restores us when we wander.
- He leads us beside peaceful waters.
- He remains with us through life’s darkest valleys.
- He prepares an eternal home for His people.
According to a well-loved tradition, this hymn held special significance for Baker throughout his ministry. It is often said that he requested it be sung as he lay dying in 1877, finding comfort in its message that the Good Shepherd would lead him safely home. While some details of this account have been retold in different ways over the years, the story beautifully reflects the hope expressed in the hymn itself.
