Week 39

Blissfulness

Most of us do not usually go for a family stroll once we reach adulthood. Life becomes busy with work, responsibilities, appointments, and the many demands of everyday living. Unless it is a family holiday or a special outing, there may be few opportunities simply to walk together without a particular destination in mind. Yet a stroll is more than just a slow walk. It gives us permission to slow our pace, put aside our busy schedules, and enjoy the precious gift of being together. Sometimes, the best conversations happen when we are walking side by side, with nowhere urgent to go and nothing more important to do than simply enjoy one another’s company.

Perhaps the scene brings back memories of holding our children’s hands when they were young, listening to their endless questions, telling them stories, or sharing little stories about God and His goodness. We may remember walking home after dinner, taking an evening stroll with our spouse, or watching our children run ahead while we followed behind. The gentle breeze, the fading sunlight, the sound of laughter, and the familiar footsteps beside us may have seemed ordinary at the time. Yet looking back, we realise that these unhurried moments were among life’s sweetest treasures not because of where we went, but because of who walked beside us.

As we grow older, we begin to understand that true joy is often found not in the things we once desired, but in recognising the simple gifts God has already placed in our hands. A loving family, faithful friends, a familiar face, a shared laugh, a meaningful conversation, or a peaceful walk together can be expressions of God’s abundant goodness. He often hides His greatest blessings in ordinary moments, quietly filling our hearts with gratitude and reminding us that we are loved. Sometimes we only recognise the value of these moments when they have already become precious memories.

Walking together is also a beautiful picture of our journey with God. We may not always know what lies around the next corner, but we can take one step at a time, trusting that He walks with us. There will be seasons when the path is joyful and bright, and others when the road feels difficult or uncertain. Yet God’s grace remains sufficient for every step. He gives us people to walk alongside us, to encourage us when we are weary, listen when our hearts are heavy, celebrate when we rejoice, and remind us that we never have to walk alone.

Perhaps God is also reminding us that we are not only meant to receive companionship, but to offer it. There may be someone around us who is quietly longing for a listening ear, a friendly conversation, or simply someone willing to walk beside them for a while. We may not be able to solve their problems, but our presence can remind them that they are seen, valued, and not forgotten. A simple invitation for a walk, a phone call, a visit, or a few unhurried moments together can become a beautiful expression of God’s love.

May we never become so busy that we miss the joy of walking alongside the people God has entrusted to us. As we look back with gratitude at the footsteps, conversations, laughter, and memories shared along life’s journey, may we also look around and notice who might need our companionship today. Is there someone who needs a word of encouragement, a listening ear, or simply someone to walk beside them for a while? Perhaps this week, we can be that person—and in doing so, become a quiet blessing through whom God’s love continues to walk with others.

Bible Verse:

See how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to live together in unity!

Psalm 133:1 WEB

Who has made your life’s journey richer through their love, encouragement, or companionship, and how can you let them know they are a blessing to you today?

Take an unhurried walk with a family member, friend, or neighbour. Put away distractions, listen with your heart, and let your time together become a gift of love and encouragement.

Hymn for the Reflection

Count Your Blessings

Hymn Writer

Johnson Oatman Jr. (1856–1922) was an American Methodist lay preacher, businessman, and one of the most prolific gospel hymn writers of the late nineteenth century.

Born in New Jersey, Oatman worked in his family’s mercantile business before entering the insurance industry. Although he never became a full-time pastor, he devoted much of his life to Christian ministry through preaching and writing hymns.

Remarkably, he wrote over 5,000 hymn texts, many of which encouraged believers to live joyful, thankful, and faithful Christian lives. His hymns were widely used in revival meetings, Sunday schools, and churches across America and beyond.

The Story Behind the Hymn

Johnson Oatman Jr. wrote “Count Your Blessings” in 1897 during a period when gospel songs were becoming an important part of Christian worship and evangelistic meetings.

The hymn addresses a timeless human tendency—to focus on problems rather than God’s goodness.

Instead of becoming discouraged by life’s difficulties, Oatman encourages believers to deliberately remember the many ways God has blessed them.

Its memorable refrain, “Count your blessings, name them one by one,”

invites Christians to cultivate gratitude by reflecting on God’s faithfulness in everyday life.

Edwin O. Excell composed the lively melody that helped make the hymn easy to remember and sing. The combination of simple words and an uplifting tune quickly made it one of the most beloved gospel hymns of its era.

Missionaries carried the hymn around the world, and it became especially popular in Britain after evangelist R. A. Torrey included it in his revival campaigns. It has since been translated into many languages and continues to encourage believers to live with thankful hearts.
