Full Bloom
Unless you are allergic to pollen or the fragrance of flowers, most of us cannot help but pause to admire a beautiful bloom. A splash of colour has a remarkable way of lifting the heart. We are blessed to live in Singapore, our Garden City, where flowers brighten our everyday journeys. From the spectacular displays at Gardens by the Bay to the cheerful bougainvillea blooming along stretches of the East Coast Parkway, beauty often greets us when we least expect it.
The bougainvillea has always fascinated me. It is not a rare flower hidden away in a special garden. Instead, it grows almost everywhere spilling over garden walls, brightening neighbourhood walkways, lining quiet paths, and even transforming ordinary road dividers into ribbons of vibrant colour. How many times have we driven past them without noticing? Yet on one particular day, when the sunlight catches their brilliant pinks, purples, oranges, and whites, they suddenly seem impossible to ignore. They bring back memories of leisurely walks through familiar neighbourhoods, where simple sights quietly refreshed the soul. They remind us that God often places beauty in the most ordinary places, waiting for us to notice it.
Perhaps life is much like that. We often expect God’s blessings to arrive in dramatic ways, yet His grace frequently appears in quiet and unexpected moments—a prayer answered after a long wait, an encouraging word from a friend, a warm smile from a stranger, an unexpected opportunity, or a peaceful moment after a difficult season. Like the bougainvillea blooming beside a busy road, His goodness has a way of appearing just when our hearts need it most. Looking back, we may realise that some of His greatest gifts were the ones we almost overlooked.
One of God’s precious blessings is opening our eyes to His goodness woven into everyday life. He refreshes our weary hearts through His beautiful creation and surrounds us with people who reflect His kindness, encouragement, and love. Even when life feels ordinary, He is quietly colouring our days with His grace, reminding us that His love has never ceased to bloom around us.
As we journey through another season of grace, may we learn to notice the “bougainvillea moments” God places along our path, the unexpected beauty that appears in familiar places, the quiet kindness that brightens an ordinary day, and the gentle reminders that He is always near. And as He has filled our lives with colour and hope, may we also become people who bring unexpected beauty into the lives of others through our words, our kindness, and our love. Sometimes, the brightest flowers God plants in the world are the lives of His people, blooming wherever He has placed them.

Unlike many famous hymns, “Fairest Lord Jesus” does not have a single identifiable author.
The text originated as an anonymous German hymn known as “Schönster Herr Jesu” (“Most Beautiful Lord Jesus”). It first appeared in printed form in the seventeenth century, although some scholars believe it may have existed even earlier as part of the devotional life of German Christians.
The best-known English version was translated and adapted by Joseph Augustus Seiss (1823–1904), a Lutheran pastor, theologian, and author. Seiss devoted much of his ministry to preaching Christ and making classic Christian hymns accessible to English-speaking congregations.
Because of its anonymous origins, the hymn has become a reminder that the greatest Christian songs point not to their writers, but to the Saviour they praise.
The Story Behind the Hymn
The exact circumstances surrounding the hymn’s composition remain unknown, giving it something of a beautiful mystery.
One long-standing tradition claims that German pilgrims sang the hymn while travelling through the countryside on their way to worship. Because of this story, the melody later became known as the “Crusader’s Hymn.” Modern historians, however, believe this connection is probably a romantic legend rather than a historical fact.
What we do know is that the hymn emerged during a period when Christians often expressed their devotion to Christ by reflecting on the beauty of the natural world. Rather than worshipping creation itself, the hymn points beyond forests, meadows, sunshine, moonlight, and stars to Jesus, declaring that He is more beautiful than anything in creation.

- Heaven is glorious.
- But Christ surpasses them all.
The hymn gently lifts our eyes from the gifts of creation to the Creator Himself.
