Materials

• Scrap cardboard (cereal boxes, packaging cardboard, corrugated cardboard)

• Rice paper or thin handmade paper
• Acrylic paints

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Base

1. Cut a piece of scrap cardboard to your desired size.
2. If desired, peel away parts of the top layer to reveal the corrugated texture underneath.
3. Lightly sketch your composition or theme.

Step 2: Create a Background

1. Paint the cardboard with a thin layer of acrylic paint.
2. Use one or more colours to create an interesting background.
3. Allow the paint to dry.

Step 3: Collect Magazine Images

1. Browse magazines and cut out interesting images, patterns, words, or colours.
2. Select pieces that fit your chosen theme.
3. Arrange them loosely before gluing.

Step 4: Build the Collage

1. Glue magazine cut-outs onto the painted cardboard.
2. Layer the printed rice paper pieces over and around the magazine images.
3. Overlap elements to create depth and interest.
4. Leave some areas exposed to show the painted background.

Step 5: Add Acrylic Details

1. Use acrylic paint to connect different elements.
2. Add patterns, lines, highlights, shadows, or decorative marks.
3. Dry-brush techniques can help blend layers together.

Step 6: Rice Paper Printing

1. Print meaning verses, or encouraging words on rice paper.
2. Cut the rice paper with text to desired size and press the rice paper gently onto the painted surface.

Step 7: Finishing Touches

1. Review your collage and add final details if needed.
2. Let everything dry completely.
3. Apply a thin coat of matte or gloss medium if desired for protection.
