On the Day of Pentecost, the believers were gathered in prayer when suddenly a sound like a mighty rushing wind filled the house. What looked like tongues of fire appeared and rested on each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in different languages.
A crowd soon gathered. Jews from many nations were amazed to hear the believers speaking in their own languages. Some were astonished, while others mocked and said, “They are drunk.”
Peter stood up and explained, “These people are not drunk. This is the fulfilment of God’s promise to pour out His Spirit on all people.”
He boldly proclaimed that Jesus, whom they had crucified, had been raised from the dead, exalted by God, and had poured out the Holy Spirit upon them.
The people were deeply moved and asked, “What shall we do?”
Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
That day, about three thousand people believed and were baptised. The new believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, prayer, fellowship, and sharing meals together. Through many miracles and acts of love, the church continued to grow day by day.
