Solomon & Building the Temple Story

Solomon loved the Lord and followed the example of his father David. One day, he went to Gibeon and offered 1,000 burnt sacrifices. That night, God appeared to him in a dream and said, “What do you want me to give you?”

Solomon replied, “I feel like a child. Give me wisdom to lead your people well.”

God was pleased. “Because you asked for wisdom—not wealth or long life—I will give you unmatched wisdom, and also riches, honour, and long life, if you follow me as David did.”

Soon after, two women came before Solomon with a dispute. Both claimed to be the mother of the same baby. Solomon ordered a sword and said, “Cut the child in half and give each woman part.”

One woman begged, “No! Let her have the child—just let him live.”

The other said, “Yes, divide him.”

Solomon declared, “Give the boy to the first woman. She is the true mother.” All Israel marvelled at his wisdom.

Solomon ruled over a vast, peaceful kingdom from the Euphrates to Egypt. Israel was prosperous, and the people were as numerous as the sand on the shore. He had knowledge of plants, animals, and more, and kings from around the world sent envoys to hear him speak.

Solomon knew he was called to build the Lord’s Temple. He assembled a large workforce and secured materials, including cedar from King Hiram of Lebanon. Construction took seven years, and was so carefully planned that no tools were heard at the site. The Temple was covered in cedar and pure gold, with golden furnishings. He even made space for Gentiles to come and pray.

When the Temple was complete, Solomon gathered Israel’s leaders. The priests brought the Ark of God to the Most Holy Place, and as they did, the glory of the Lord filled the Temple like a thick cloud.

Solomon praised God, blessed the people, and prayed. He asked God to forgive His people when they repented, and to also hear Gentiles who prayed there. The nation celebrated and dedicated the Temple with sacrifices and joy for fourteen days.

God then appeared to Solomon again: “I have heard your prayer and set this Temple apart. If you follow me, I will establish your kingdom forever. But if you turn from me and worship other gods, I will leave this house, and it will become a disgrace. I will remove Israel from the land.”

Afterward, Solomon spent thirteen years building his palace and many cities. He oversaw great construction projects and ruled with unmatched wisdom. There was no king like Solomon in all the world.
