After His baptism, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where He fasted for forty days and forty nights. At the end of this time, He was physically weak and hungry.
Then the devil came to Him and said, “If You are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread.” But Jesus answered, “It is written: Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
Next, the devil took Jesus to Jerusalem and placed Him on the highest point of the temple. He said, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written that God will command His angels to protect You.” Jesus replied, “It is also written: Do not put the Lord your God to the test.”
Finally, the devil took Jesus to a high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. He said, “All this I will give You if You bow down and worship me.” Jesus answered firmly, “Away from Me, Satan! For it is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.”
At that moment, the devil left Him, and angels came and ministered to Him.
