Stephen Story

A dispute arose in the early church over the care of widows, as some were being neglected. The apostles said they must focus on prayer and teaching, so they asked the believers to choose seven respected, Spirit-filled men of wisdom to oversee this responsibility. The church agreed and appointed seven men, including Stephen and Philip. The apostles prayed for them, and the church continued to grow, even among many Jewish priests.

Stephen, full of God’s grace and power, performed great wonders. When some argued with him, they could not stand against his wisdom, so they spread false accusations and brought him before the council.

When questioned, Stephen responded by recounting Israel’s history, showing how God had led His people from Abraham through Moses and David. He concluded by rebuking the leaders for resisting God and rejecting the “Righteous One,” Jesus.

Enraged, the council dragged him out of the city and stoned him. As he was dying, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit” and “Forgive them.” A young man named Saul approved of his death.

This event sparked severe persecution in Jerusalem. Many believers were scattered, though the apostles remained in the city, and the church continued to spread.
