After feeding the five thousand, Jesus went up a mountainside to pray while His disciples set out across the sea. As night fell, a strong wind rose and a violent storm swept across the water. The disciples struggled against the waves, rowing hard, but they were unable to make progress.
In the early hours of the morning, around the fourth watch of the night, Jesus came to them walking on the water. The disciples saw Him moving across the waves and were terrified, thinking He was a ghost.
But Jesus spoke to them and said, “Take courage. It is I. Do not be afraid.”
Peter replied, “Lord, if it is You, tell me to come to You on the water.”
Jesus said, “Come.”
Peter stepped out of the boat and began walking toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind and the waves, fear overtook him, and he began to sink. He cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Immediately, Jesus reached out His hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” He said, “why did you doubt?”
Then they climbed into the boat together, and the wind died down. The disciples were filled with awe and worshiped Him, saying, “Truly, You are the Son of God.”
