Gethsemane Story

As Jesus and his disciples left the gates of Jerusalem, he said, “You will all fall away because of me tonight. But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”

Peter replied, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”

Jesus answered, “This very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.”

Peter insisted, “Even if I must die with you, I will never deny you.” And all the others said the same.

They came to the Garden of Gethsemane, an olive grove. Jesus told his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” He took Peter, James, and John with him and began to be deeply distressed. “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow. Stay here and keep watch.”

Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed, “Father, if it is possible, take this cup from me. Yet not my will, but yours be done.”

He returned and found them sleeping. “Could you not keep watch for one hour?” he said to Peter. “Watch and pray so you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

He went away and prayed again, and again returned to find them sleeping. The third time he prayed in deep anguish, and an angel strengthened him.

Then Jesus said, “The hour has come.”

Judas arrived with a crowd carrying torches and weapons. He had arranged a signal: “The one I kiss is the man.”

He stepped forward and kissed Jesus. Jesus said, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”

Then he asked the crowd, “Who are you looking for?”

“Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied.

“I am he,” Jesus said. At his words, they stepped back and fell to the ground.

He asked again, and they said the same. Then he said, “Let these men go.”

Peter drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. But Jesus said, “Put your sword away. Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?” He touched the man’s ear and healed him.

Then all the disciples fled, and Jesus was arrested and led away from the garden.
