Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet Story

That evening, Jesus and his disciples gathered in the upper room. During the meal, Jesus rose from the table, took off his outer garment, wrapped a towel around his waist, and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet.

When he came to Peter, Peter protested, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”

Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”

Peter said, “No, you shall never wash my feet.”

Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”

Peter said, “Then, Lord, not just my feet, but my hands and my head as well!”

Jesus said, “A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not all of you.”

When he finished, he sat down and said, “Do you understand what I have done for you? I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet. Now you should wash one another’s feet. No servant is greater than his master.”

As the meal continued, Jesus became deeply troubled and said, “One of you will betray me.” The disciples were shocked and began to ask one another, “Lord, is it I?”

Jesus said that the one to whom he would give the dipped bread would be the one. He dipped the piece of bread and gave it to Judas Iscariot. At that moment, Judas left the room. The others assumed he had gone out on some errand.

After Judas left, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and said, “Take and eat; this is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, he took the cup and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”

After they had sung a hymn together, Jesus prayed for them at length. Then they left and went out toward the Mount of Olives.
