Israel’s kings followed the sins of Jeroboam, and Ahab was the worst of all. Influenced by his wife Jezebel, he built a temple for Baal in Samaria. Then the prophet Elijah appeared and declared, “No rain or dew will fall until I say so!”
God sent Elijah to a brook, where ravens fed him until the water dried up. Then a widow in Zarephath cared for him, and her flour and oil miraculously never ran out. Later, when her son died, Elijah prayed, and the boy was brought back to life.
After three years of drought, Elijah confronted Ahab and challenged the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. They called on Baal all day, but nothing happened. Then Elijah rebuilt the Lord’s altar, drenched it with water, and prayed. Fire fell from heaven, consuming the sacrifice, wood, stones, and water. The people cried, “The Lord, He is God!” Elijah had the prophets of Baal executed, and soon after, heavy rain returned.
When Jezebel threatened to kill him, Elijah fled in despair. He prayed to die, but God strengthened him and brought him to Mount Sinai. There, Elijah experienced wind, earthquake, and fire—but the Lord was in a gentle whisper. God assured him he was not alone, for 7,000 in Israel had not bowed to Baal, and He commanded Elijah to anoint Elisha as his successor.
Elisha left everything to follow Elijah. Later, when God was about to take Elijah, the two crossed the Jordan on dry ground after Elijah struck the river with his cloak. Elisha asked for a double portion of his spirit. Suddenly, a fiery chariot carried Elijah to heaven in a whirlwind. Elisha took up Elijah’s cloak, struck the Jordan, and crossed back—showing the Lord’s spirit was now with him.
Elisha performed miracles, purifying Jericho’s water and later being honoured as Elijah’s successor.
