God told Joshua, “Today I will exalt you so the people know I am with you as I was with Moses.” Joshua instructed the priests to carry the Ark to the flooded Jordan River. When their feet touched the water, the river stopped, forming a wall upstream, and the riverbed dried.
The priests stood on dry ground as the people crossed. Joshua had twelve men carry large stones from the riverbed to build a monument on the far side. The people saw Joshua honoured, knowing God was with him.
After everyone crossed, the priests left the riverbed, and the waters returned to normal. Joshua led the people to Gilgal, where they camped and set up the stone memorial. He said it would remind future generations of God’s power.
News of the miraculous crossing spread fear among Canaan’s cities. Joshua then had the Israelites circumcised, which hadn’t been done in 40 years. They celebrated Passover, and the manna stopped appearing, as they began eating the produce of Canaan.
